Care & Maintenance

Your hardwood floor is an investment as well as an expression of yourself and the pride you have in your home and surroundings.  However, hardwood is a natural material, which means that it is sensitive to conditions such as severe abrasion, sudden impact, heavy pressure, moisture etc.  It makes good sense to protect the beauty and appearance of your floor from the start just as you would protect any similar investment in your home.

Cleaning:  The protective finish on your wood floor is the product of the latest technology in this industry.  It is made from polyurethane that has been combined with aluminum oxide, which is one of the hardest industrial products known.  A light dust mopping or vacuuming is required to keep the surface free of dust, grit, sand and abrasive materials.  Entranceway mats are effective in reducing the amount of tracked-in grit and sand from the bottom of shoes, but be sure to avoid indoor rugs with abrasive surfaces on the underside.  When necessary, a damp (not wet) mop may be used.  No-wax, non-acidic hardwood flooring cleaners are available and can be sprayed directly onto the mop sponge.  Do not use an oil or wax on your floor.  If a liquid spill occurs, ensure that it is wiped up immediately.

Marking:  Areas of the floor that are hidden under rugs or furniture or exposed to strong sunlight may tend to fade or darken over long periods.  Move area rugs periodically and use Low E glass and window shades to shield the floor from strong summer sun.  It is recommended that you install felt pads or similar protection under furniture legs.  Ensure that the pads are kept clean and in good condition.  Protect the floor when moving any furniture by sliding the furniture on a heavy blanket or rug.  Do not walk on wood floors with high spiked heels or shoes.  Keep pets with sharp claws away from your wood floors.
